Imitate your Impact

As a PGA Teaching Professional, I’ve spent thousands of hours understanding the mechanics of a golf swing.  I’ve started paying more attention to the lower body and how it moves in the swing.  Many instructors become over infatuated with what the hands, arms and club are doing, but forget to look at the tendencies of the lower body.  To most teaching professionals, the lower body is the hips, legs, knees and feet.  I also have learned that how the lower body operates can certainly influence the technique and movements of the upper body and how the club swings back to impact.

Golf Drills – Imitate your Impact

A drill that I’ve found very helpful is what I call “Imitate your Impact”.  Start by setting up to the ball in your address position with an 8 iron.  Without swinging the club away, keep the club head directly behind the ball and move your body and arms and hands into what you would imagine your impact to be if you swung at full speed.  Start by shifting and turning your hips very smoothly and slowly.  As your lower body moves into position, you’ll notice the arms and hands lean the shaft forward.  Hold the impact position for a few seconds and then repeat the procedure.

A few years back, I attended a seminar given by PGA Teaching Professional, Mike Malaska.  Mike would have Zack Johnson, of the PGA Tour, do this drill over and over for nearly an hour.  He would place a mirror in front of Zack and have him watch himself “Imitate his Impact”.  This drill was used just before Zack won The Masters and he still uses this drill today.

To see how your body parts are working in a golf swing, it might be good to see it on video.  I’m always using my video cameras when I teach, because I’ve realized the importance of confirming what I’d like for my students to concentrate on while they practice.  It’s also important for me to share the videos with them, so they can watch the swings from home and capture a visual image of what their swing looks like.  This way the student can imagine that perfect impact position.

Please consult your local PGA Teaching Professional for more information on what your impact position should look like.  If you are ever in the Raleigh / Durham area and interested in a golf lesson, please contact me through my website at:  www.grexagolf.com
