Use your hips and abs to pull the club

As a PGA Teaching Professional, I’ve spent endless hours studying the mechanics of the golf swing.  By all means, I am not a fitness expert or personal trainer.  I have, however, video taped hundreds of PGA & LPGA Tour Professionals to see how they move.  Certified personal trainers will understand the muscles and the body better than most PGA Teaching Professionals.  Teaching professionals generally study positions of the club and personal trainers focus on body parts.  Nevertheless, more PGA Professionals have certainly taken the initiative to become certified as trainers.  All in all, they do go hand in hand.  If you want to be an athlete, then you should train like one.

In this video, you’ll see me performing an exercise that involves using my lower body first and then a pull with the chest and arms.

The hip rotation (which is a big muscle) should ideally engage the down swing.  If you watch the best players in the world, the hips, without a doubt, start the down swing.  Most average golfers start the down swing with the hands, which throws the sequence of a golf swing out of balance.  This is why I have spent many hours working on my core and hips with my personal trainer at Raleigh Strength and Fitness.  He has helped me improve my mechanics by focusing on strengthening and at the time encouraging flexibility for proper range of motion.

Here are a few of things to remember about training:

  • If you are a beginner, consult with a certified personal trainer or PGA Professional
  • Always warm up and stretch before going at full speed
  • Drink plenty of water when you exercise
  • Always try to train with a partner when you can

To see how your body parts are working in your swing, have a PGA Teaching Professional take some video.  Seeing is believing!

Please consult your local PGA Teaching Professional for more information on the key components you should be working on in your swing.  If you are ever in the Raleigh / Durham area and interested in a golf lesson, please contact me through my website at: www.grexagolf.com
