Are golf lessons helpful?

On January 11, 2014, I had a new student take his first lesson with me.  He’s a 15 year old high school player in the 10th grade.  He came to me with the desire to improve his game and to be the best player on his team.  His goal is to be the team captain and play at a very competitive level once he goes to college.

Can you see the improvements from the face on camera angle and from the down the line camera angle?  This is a 3 week improvement.  The left hip sway is nearly gone from the face on camera.  The shoulder turn is better from the face on camera angle.  You won’t see as much of a reverse pivot, therefore the club won’t swing as long.  From the down the line camera angle, the alignment is well improved.  The hips don’t thrust inward and are starting to rotate and turn, therefore maintaining much better posture.  You won’t see a jump, but the golfer is much more grounded.  These are things you’ll notice with a high percentage of the best players around the world.

A couple of simple things to understand about any golf swing:
1. The lower body must not sway out of position in the back swing
2. The shoulders & chest must make a good turn to complete the back swing (coil)
3. The hips must engage the transition to the down swing (uncoil)
4. The hips lead the shoulders, arms and wrist release into impact

If you’ve been optimistic about taking golf lessons, consult a qualified PGA Teaching Professional.  Do your homework and check around for a golf instructor that has time to help you improve.  Remember that you’ll need to commit to the golf instructor, as much as he or she will need to commit to you.  It’s a two way street, but take time to find a golf instructor that provides you video, drills and exercises.  Don’t rely on the golf lessons as your only source to improvement.

If you are in the Raleigh / Durham area, and would like to take your first golf lesson, or need more information, please contact me through my website at:  www.grexagolf.com
