Start preparing now for 2014

Now that Thanksgiving has past and we are in to December, many golfers around the world have put their golf clubs away for the winter season.  As a PGA Teaching Professional, I never like to see any of my students put the golf clubs away.  Luckily, I live in Raleigh, NC, so we have fair weather throughout the year.  However, we do tend to have some extremely cold days and there’s always a possibility for some ice and snow.  Nevertheless, for the most part, we have our days in the mid 40’s and low 50’s, which is fair weather to tee it up when the sun it out.

If you are in an area of the world that doesn’t allow for every day outdoor practice, there are plenty of things you can do to prepare for the warmer days, or the 1st part of your golf season.

Here’s a small list of things I used to do when I lived in Pittsburgh, PA.

  1. Plan a trip to play some golf with your golfing buddies
  2. Find an indoor facility that enables you to make a few swings and hit a few balls
  3. Replace your grips, repair your equipment, or order new equipment
  4. Exercise or use the gym to keep your body in shape and prepare
  5. Now is a great time to purchase new golf shirts (you can find some good sales)
  6. Stock up on customized golf balls – be prepared
  7. Work on your golf swing inside using drills and training aids

As you can see, there are plenty of things you can do without playing 9 or 18 holes of golf.  Don’t think for one second that you can’t improve your game by working on the things I’ve mentioned.  I always enjoyed doing those things when Pittsburgh was getting hammered with 6 inches of snow.  Sometimes I’d shovel off an area of snow and hit a few balls into the woods behind my house.  I’d never find those balls until April when all the snow melted.

I’m located at Wildwood Green Golf Club and always find time to teach lessons during the so called off season.  I have plenty of students that realize the importance of getting better and continue to practice whether it’s warm or cold.  Remember, if you aren’t practicing, someone else will be.  Take time to find creative ways to work on your game.

If you are in the Raleigh / Durham area, I’d be honored to talk with you about your game.  For more information or setting up a lesson time, please contact me through my website at:  www.grexagolf.com
