Happy Thanksgiving Drill

As a PGA Teaching Professional, it’s important to include drills and exercises to improve the golf swing.  All too often, I see golfers get a tip and never really try to exaggerate the advice to the point where a change was made.  They think they made a change, but went so fast and rapid that they didn’t even come close.  Changes occur when an exaggeration has been made by slowing way down and training the body and muscles to perform a new movement.  At first, the new movement should probably feel a little strange, but after repeating the moves over and over, it should start to feel more natural.  I’ve heard that it takes an average of 21 days to create a habit.  I suppose it depends on the golfer to how quickly they can encourage a new adjustment and make it seem more comfortable.

My job as a PGA Teaching Professional is to come up with new drills that can encourage proper swing changes.  I will watch golf channel, youtube, golf tournaments and read books, magazines and articles to see what my colleagues are suggesting.  My only dilemma is that too many golfers are trying way too many different drills, but aren’t working on a specific drill relative to the swing changes they are trying to make at that time.  Nevertheless, I feel that some drills can help with timing, tempo and hand & eye coordination.  A good hand & eye coordination drill can help every golfer improve in some way.

Try this drill to improve your coordination:

The one handed drill works for every golfer in a couple of simple ways.  It helps to keep you centered over the ball without swaying or shifting out of balance.  To be stable and centered over the ball while you swing the club will improve your impact position.  The idea is to use your right hand and even switch to your left hand.  Try holding the club in each hand and swing the club while staying centered over the ball and you’ll notice a more solid impact.  Do this drill to build a tempo before making full swings.

Working on your game to improve is important.  Never give up and try to find a qualified PGA Teaching Professional to help you from time to time.  If you are working on the proper swing changes at the right point in time, you will improve.  Keep in mind that making improvements will take time and will depend on what you are working on.  Stay positive, relaxed and have patience so your improvements can be made at a quicker pace.  Also, if you can, find a qualified personal trainer to help you build a body that will improve your swing mechanics.  A team of qualified professionals can help you attain your goals at a faster pace.

Please consult your local PGA Teaching Professional for more information on drills for hand & eye coordination.  If you are ever in the Raleigh / Durham area and interested in a golf lesson, please contact me through my website at:  www.grexagolf.com
